About the Inventor

Inventor of the Dust Director

Ted Segiel, Jr.

I am a tool and fastener sales representative to the construction industry.

In 1983, as an Information Center Analyst at Amp Incorporated.  I researched, purchased, and customized computer software programs for various departments within the corporation.

In late 1989, after a few years of learning the ins-and-outs of construction-sales, I used my research and design and product solving background to help provide solutions to the construction trades.

Indirectly, my interest in trying to make the contractors' job a bit easier helped me in getting to know my customers on a more personal basis.  It even got to the point when making a sales call that the contractors would always welcomed me by asking, "Ted, what's new?"

In 1999, the BAC (Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, International Masonry Union) approached and asked me to help them find a way that their members could cut masonry products . . . "without the dust".

The challenge intrigued me, for two reasons . . .

  1. First . . . it wouldn't be just another product to sell.  The silica dust that is created by cutting masonry products has been classified as carcinogenic . . . leading to such diseases as silicosis - a major lung disease.  As one union official said, "your help in finding such a dustless product "will help save lives."

As I began my research phase on dustless cutting tools, I soon realized that what the contractors really wanted . . . what they needed . . . simply just didn't exist.

  2. I was told that, "anyone can invent something . . . 99% of those with an idea, never see it through, they never complete their idea - for whatever reason . . ."

So, in keeping with my competitive nature, I made up my mind that I wasn't going to be part of a loser statistic - not my style.

Thus, I continued into the design phase and concluded with not just a patent on the Dust Director™ (US Patent No. US 6,648,742 B1), but with something that has become very meaningful to me:

Positive and thankful comments on "a well thought-out product" - the Dust Director™.

Additional, I have had meaningful conversations with all types of people - from all over the world - for whom this invention was specifically designed for:  the contractors, the guys actually doing the work . . . "on the wall".

All the Best in Dustless Cutting,

Theodore R. Segiel, Jr.
